The Skyline High School Wrestling team performed great at Sherando’s Andrew Kenney Memorial Dual Tournament this Friday, December 8, 2017. The tournament is a two day format, but due to the 90% chance of snow on day two, the tournament was pushed to just one day. Our wrestlers were competing as late as midnight, but they did not let that become a weakness.
The Hawks came out strong and wrestled tough in the first dual of the tournament against Millbrook (8th 2017 4A States). The dual opened with the 160 pound weight class. The Hawks won 7 of the 14 match-ups. This was a close dual coming down to the last match. Skyline was victorious with a 39-37 final score! Jacob Grady, Ethan Gue, Taja Showers, Tyler Davis, Morgan Robinson, Talon Keel, and Anthony Domino all garnered wins for the Hawks!
The second match was against Amherst (10th 2017 4A States). This dual went back and forth for a bit, but then Skyline got a lead and held on to close the match with a 43-31 victory. Eight hawks brought home wins, and some of the others lost close to help ensure the victory. Victories came from Derrick Coleman, Jacob Grady, Tyler Davis, Logan Maiatico, Morgan Robinson, Talon Keel, Anthony Domino, and Sam Brown.
The next match-up for the Hawks was against 4A Loudoun County. Skyline took a great lead early on in the match and continued to win 9 out of the 14 weight classes. Seven of those wins were pins by Jacob Grady, Ethan Gue, Tyler Davis, Morgan Robinson, Talon Keel, Anthony Domino, and Sam Brown. One of the wins was by major decision from freshman Maxim Keel with an 11-1 victory. The other win came from Dathen Montoya who received a forfeit victory for the Hawks. The final score was an impressive 52-23 win!
Next, the Hawks took on what would be the toughest dual of the day against Chantilly Chargers, who placed 9th in the 6A State tournament last year. The Hawks were determined to go out and battle for victory, but came up short with a final score of 40-32. Six of the Skyline wrestlers proved to be triumphant against the Chargers. Ethan Gue, Tyler Davis, Morgan Robinson, Talon Keel, Anthony Domino, and Jacob Grady brought home the win for the Hawks. WIth this loss, the Hawks were knocked out of the championship and would go on to wrestle for 3rd place.
The final match of the night was against notable 5A returning state champs, Brooke Point Black-Hawks. This match began at around 11:30 p.m., but that did not stop our Hawks from bringing their best to the mat. After forfeits at 220, heavyweight, and 106, the match began with the 113 pound weight class. Tyler Davis bumped up for the Hawks to pin his opponent in the second period. Logan Maiatico then wrestled next in an exciting match and pinned his kid in the second period. Next up was Maxim Keel, who pinned his opponent in the second period, after a tough match, rallying the team to go on and continue to be victorious! Morgan Robinson and Talon Keel also claimed pins for Skyline. Dominic Guizar, Anthony Domino, and Ethan Gue all received forfeits, scoring another 18 points for Skyline. The final score of the dual for 3rd place was 48-26 with the victory going to Skyline! Skyline beat the 5A state champs in an exciting last dual of the long day.
Congratulations to the amazing performance of the Hawks! Keep working hard and grinding on the mat. Up next for the Hawks is the Holiday Rumble Duals at Stuarts Draft High School on December 15th and 16th.
